More WoW... I've got a question for EE... Have you ever slain Deathwing? Can you even kill him?

Yes, I have. Traditionally, I never get to kill the end bosses of expansions -- at least not in their current expansion. I had to wait until Cataclysm to kill the Lich King, for instance. But Blizzard came up with this new Raid Finder tool (which is like the Dungeon Finder, if you've tried that yet) to access the Deathwing raid, Dragon Soul, quickly and easily (and at a reduced difficulty) so I finally got to experience the end of an expansion's storyline while it was current.

I chronicled the event on my blog: I Killed a Dragon, and I Liked It

And what the hey, here's a video, too:

...And he's still not dead after that.

I wish I knew - and I've been playing it a lot in the past few months!

The Mass Effect series and Alan Wake are the only games I can really get into. I've tried some others, but none of them are as interesting. For me, ME's strength is very much in it's character development. It's nice to see characters form throughout a story-based game which gets you quite involved.

the first game ended up being a set up of the base logic of the games universe, the second really got into the character work a lot more and introduced some more conflicted characters, such as Mordin who's largely responsible for developing a disease that caused a holocaust who's struggling to see it as a logical decision. There are others, Thane, Jack... but none carried over to the final game as well as Mordin, and seeing that development unfold was a wonderful story within the game.

And I usually hate stories and cut scenes, but it's not as intrusive in ME.

Even as someone who only played the demo of one game, I think I get the general idea of what the appeal of Mass Effect is. It's an epic and complex sci-fi story that seems very deep and well-told. Tie that to fairly polished gameplay, an unprecedented level of control over your own character, stunning graphics, and hot CG girls in tight outfits, and you have an easy hit.

It is worth noting I was impressed enough to buy the first game, and if the damn thing had actually worked (frack you, Bioware), I'd probably be as big a ME nut as Nan.

It also gained a lot of free publicity when people blew up over the in-game sex scenes and started freaking out about "Ass Effect" corrupting our children. Nevermind that the CG sex is actually more tasteful than you'd see in a lot of prime time TV dramas...

Of course, if you just listen to Raven's Facebook posts, you'd think the entire game consisted of just trying to bang as many crewmembers as possible. :P

Between us our Shepards have racked up pretty much the whole crew. It's quite fun. Although thankfully the third installment has solved one of the problems caused by that. With some characters, you get the most out of them with romance options. It seems to be a little bit easier in the third to be nice without an accidental relationship in the game.

Interestingly, the gay characters in ME3 are some of the best written in sci fi because they're very far from being stereotypes.

If you ever give ME another chance, I'd say it's well worth it. I just went through ME1 again, wwhich almost felt like a chore as the character work in the follow ups goes a lot deeper and those personal stories make the game.
