And I must say, even though I'm not a Ringer, I think this cast is sooooo brilliant (I'm a big fan of Martin Freeman from BBC's Sherlock), that I may have to actually go see this one...

No, it's for December of NEXT year. That kind of blows showing this much almost a YEAR before the movie comes out. I'm not a Ringer, but even I might have to check this one out just for the cast (a virtual who's-who of the BBC's best).

Found an article on CNN this morning where Peter Jackson defends previewed Hobbit footage that was met with mixed results. Apparently the 3D film is being shot at a higher frame rate (48 fps instead of the standard 24-30) that was not to everyone's liking (my guess is the footage wasn't shown with the proper playback equipment). Those look about as comfortable as strapping sugar canes to your face.

But, I'll probably wear them only because "The Hobbit" is actually being shot in 3D. If it were a retrofit, I wouldn't bother....

I just plain refuse to support 3d. It's a return of a gimmicky concept that's already past its sell by date.

There are three movies I could name where it really mattered; "Avatar", "Prometheus" and "Coraline." Those films wove the technique into the tapestry of their overall images, rather than as a tacked on afterthought. Other than those three exceptions? 3D hasn't really changed or significantly enhanced any other movie I've seen, to be honest.

I'm old enough to remember the second 3D wave in the early/mid-'80s (the first was in the '50s). Everyone also thought it was going to be a game changer then, too. It didn't. The big difference about this wave though is the technology. Some directors are using it well (subtle, and without all the popout gags). I imagine Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit" will probably be in the "Avatar" category....

But at any rate, 3D should never affect the content of a movie; a good movie is a good movie, whether it's in 3D I-Max, a 3 inch phone or projected onto a bed sheet...

The Hobbit trailer is great. Peter Jackson recently announced that instead of two movies they're making three, to fit more of the dwarf story into it. So it's more than just the (fairly short for Tolkien) book. The first movie is coming out in December 2012, so about 5 months is not an exceptionally long time for trailers.
