AOL TV is reporting that "Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome" may not end up on the boob tube anytime soon. Or even at all. Syfy president of original programming Mark Stern hinted during San Diego Comic-Con last month that no decision had been made on the ultimate fate of "Blood & Chrome," and there's a good chance it could be shown through the same medium you're reading this story.

Filming on the pilot is complete, but a good portion of the special effects are not, Stern told the site last month. Because of that, there is no immediate plans to give the show an air date, and if it does come to television, it almost definitely won't be in 2011.

The idea could be to try out "Blood & Chrome" as a backdoor pilot, similar to what Syfy did with "Battlestar Galactica" back in 2003. However, the difference here is that "Battlestar" was a four-hour miniseries, while "Blood & Chrome" will simply be a two-hour movie.

And while "Battlestar" had to face tough comparisons with the classic 1978 series, "Blood & Chrome" not only would have to live up to the hype that follows "Battlestar," but also pick up the pieces of the franchise broken when Syfy unceremoniously pulled the plug on the reincarnation bath of "Caprica." Syfy not only cancelled that show, but inexplicably pulled the remaining five episodes off the schedule and released them on DVD before showing them in a marathon.

Airlock Alpha has reached out to Stern for comment on the story, but he has yet to respond.

I know I should be surprised, but somehow this is as surprising as a sunrise...
Good or bad (I think all the re-shoots would indicate the execs behind it are less than confident), this is less and less likely to ever become a series.

I'd honestly prefer it as just a web mini-series or one off movie. I still don't think there's enough there for a full series.

All this waffling really doesn't improve my confidence in the series, though.

I agree 100%.

A one-off movie would be fine with me. If it sucks? It won't give too big a black eye to the rest of the show; it'll just be some little anomaly that came and went (like the Star Wars Holiday special). And if it's good? Hey, they always have the option of making a miniseries to continue the story.

But I agree that Cylon War 1 was an event already touched on in "Razor" (we even saw Husker's first mission, as well as it's ending). It's a dry well for a new series....

Read another article from someone who supposedly read the script and compared it to ST09. Who knows how much of a stretch that is.

I disagree with you OT regarding your statement that the 1CW is a dry well for a new series. There is a ton of potential there. The fact that they choose to center it around Adama is what kind of makes it blah for me. With a 12 year time span we could be introduced to a totally new set of characters in the NuBSG universe. Something like that with an occasional Adama tie in passing would be much more interesting to me then following a story we semi-already know.

Regardless I don't have high hopes for the show materializing into a series but I will still watch it.

Because it has the BSG label, so will I. But I'm keeping my hopes pretty low. It'd have to really awful not to meet them at this level....

I just think there is tons of material in the 1CW. We definitely did not get enough of it in the razor episodes. If Adama wasn't involved we would have more to go on and a whole new world opened up to us.

Blood & Chrome is not the unexpected offshoot that they talked about. I am sick of the Adama theme.

I think they have a potential to have a new show if its not focused on Adama. Sure he's there and turns up in every episode but have the show follow the commander of the Battlestar instead of the kid.

We've already seen the most interesting years of Adama's life; his final war with the Cylons (CW2) and the eventual exodus to Earth (OUR Earth). CW1 through his eyes would be a limiting factor, I agree. Overall, this show really doesn't need to exist beyond a good 2 hour movie. It's one of the problems with prequels; we know the outcome already (however long it may take). The only way a prequel really works for me if it's a reboot (ala Casino Royale, Batman Begins or Star Trek 2009); which is not really an option with BSG (as it already IS a reboot). Otherwise, it's like a game of hurry-up-and-wait....

To be honest? Adama's most interesting story was in CW2 and the 4 year exodus to Earth (which was already covered with BSG); all we're going to see in CW1 is a rookie pilot doing some action of the type already seen in "Razor"; which was SUPPOSED to be his first mission... at the END of the war. (OT, calling the continuity police... ).
So no, I don't care if it's Adama as the lead character or not. And as I've said, I really think this whole thing will just be one movie (to be broadcast or not; who knows?).
But I really don't see it going to series at this point (word of mouth on the project is faint to non-existent).

I think the ST09 comparison pretty much guaranteed that EE will not watch B&C....

No, I'll watch. I have an unhealthy amount of franchise loyalty. It's why I paid good money to see ST09, why I've watched far too many episodes of DS9 for my own mental health, and why I played through virtually every zone of classic WoW and Burning Crusade.
