In the first season, when Gaeta is assigned to work with Baltar in making his Cylon detector, he acts like a high school boy who's been assigned to rub suntan lotion on swimsuit models. His crush is SOOO obvious. When they made Gaeta bisexual (in the webisodes) I thought it was a bit of a copout; he was clearly homosexual. In the webisodes, they (at first) made clear he was in a relationship with Mr. Hoshi (whom he turned on rather quickly in the 4th season mutiny arc), but then they kind of 'softened' it by giving indications that he'd had an affair with one of the eights. I thought that was a bit of a back pedal; like they were afraid to make him 100% gay or something.

In fact, other than Cain (a raging psychopath), I don't think ANY of the BSG characters were gay. Except Lucifer on TOS....


And yes, this chart was clearly pre-4; because at that point, it got a little more 'busy.'

Come ON even in season one it was SO obvious there was tension between Baltar and Geata.
I know I may be a highly trained subtext spotter... but I didn't need my many special skills to figure out this one
And yeah Cain came in an ara where lesbian characters on tv were basically all evil power hungry psychopaths.
Ah well.. as long as they fear us... think we're good LOL.
However, I do want to applaud BSG in dealing with it prefectly. It was just a fact Cain was gay, they did nothing more with that, they didn't have to. It wasn't the story. Thats my problem with most gay characters in movies and series. 'Being gay' is their only personality trait or so it seems. In BSG it just wasn't a big deal and didn't define Cain's character. And Kendra's shock was towards Cains 'need' to be with someone cause she seemed so 'self sufficient' instead of her gayness. Its the main reason I dont watch lesbian or gay movies... the characters are just SO uni dimensional 'Im gay, and thats all I am' :| (exception: The L Word).

Appart from that, Baltar is what we would call A Hub. He has his own solar system of connections

It drives me insane. Especially with comedy. Will and Grace springs to mind - I can't remmeber the character name but essentially, he's a big gay stereotype. There's a British show (it's absolutely dreadful) on BBC 3 that has a barman who's only personality trait is being a stereotypical bitchy gay guy.

I've had real trouble writing a gay character (well, she didn't know she was a lesbian at first) as her coming out is a big part of a larger story. I don't see the need to make it a big deal. Every other gay character I've written hasn't been one of those stereotypes with a sandwich board declaring their sexuality.

I think thats why I liked Kendricks reaction to Gina's slip in Razor. As it was all shock that Cain had a soft side.
