IIRC they never did mention what they were. Don't think these were space fighters like we know as from BSG but some type of atmospheric fighter.
Still a great design whatever the name.

Have my doubts as this was the "MK.I VIPER" that led to the MK.II that we know and love from BSG2 but the crew from Caprica did a lot of strange stuff.
