Picturing a future Battlestar Galactica
By Eric Chu
This month we are tackling something that has been a hot topic of debate once again: Battlestar Galactica.
Recently it was announced that producer and Galactica creator Glen Larson was teaming with A-list director Bryan Singer to bring Battlestar Galactica to the big screen. The new feature, though, will be based on the premise of the original '70s TV series, as opposed to Ron Moore's critically-acclaimed re-imagined series that recently completed its run on Syfy Channel.
The paintings further down this page are an interpretation of how a Larson/Singer Galactica could look.
When I first wrote Battlestar Galactica De-Imagined...?, it became apparent from the feedback that there are still passionate members of the fan community on both pro-original series and pro-re-imagining sides. However, the overwhelming majority of people agreed that, regardless of the direction...the original cheese had to go.

First, thanks to maneth for finding and posting that, and second..... WHAT THE FRAK are they thinking?
The ships look awful; about as functional as the toy boats I used to play with in the tub when I was six. No sense of scale or mass.
Muffit....uh,er....is Muffit some kind of GIANT daggitt now, or am I missing something? They say they want to lose the cheese.... but they are keeping Boxey and the robot dog?? Okaaaayyyyy.... already worried here.
It'd be nice to admit I was wrong when I saw these new illustrations, but all they did was to reinforce my opinion that this whole enterprise reeks of 'bad idea.'
And why even bother with this ill-conceived project when they got it just right on the 2003 reboot (the serious tone, the beautiful production design, wonderful cast). Why risk ALL of that just to make a quick buck and to risk alienating the fanbase of the new show (and trust me; a buck is about ALL it would make at the box office...there is NO audience for this in the mainstream; the lesson of "Serenity") ?? This will NOT get made; just wait....
We need this like a Cylon needs microwaves!

With the last Star Trek movie that argument was to reboot the series with younger fans. If that is the argument with the BSG movie, well how young we want the fans. We could get fans from newborn to 24 months old that only thinks about crapping and eating.
Anyway, a website with illustrations does not really prove or disprove what the movie is really going to be like. The movie is not in production, and the website can be used to get the feelers out to see if it will fly or blowup in their face.
Who knows the new Cylons could be made out of plastic and painted black with pink eyes.

I can almost guarantee that Singer will NOT make this movie; he has better prospects lined up already. He'll find some way to weasel out of it.
There is NO audience for a new BSG movie! Case in three points:
* The 2003 show (which I adore with all of my tin heart, and was a major critical darling) struggled for four seasons in the ratings (even CAPRICA was a very reluctant greenlight, until SyFy realized they have a shortage of prestige projects in their usually cruddy lineup). So, there's your market research, ladies and gents. BSG (while near and dear to US, is not mainstream enough for a big budget feature film; esp considering how MUCH movies cost to make these days).
* History, folks: Singer AND Larson have huffed and puffed before (since all the way back to 1996, in Larson's case). I'll believe it's a go project when I see it in a theater (so I guess I'll never believe it then, because it has the same chance of occurring as Tricia Helfer cooking me breakfast tomorrow morning).
* And the most obvious reason: We don't frakking NEED a reboot of a reboot! Not after only ONE year! Dumbest idea since New Coke.
I really truly wish Singer would stop trying to cultivate cred with us poor geeks by waving that same familiar carrot in front of us. Go remake some big budget, effects-laden comic-book hero, Bryan Singer! Stick to what you know. RDM and co already hit the BSG ball out of the park six frakking years ago!! Let it be already and stop allowing your reps to spread BSG disinformation all over the media, OK?
Figures the guys' initials are B.S!
