Every time I start one of my G1980 rants (about four a month, it seems) it usually begins with 'that little creep Doctor Zee!' So rather than waste valuable thread room elsewhere (and accepting a dare), I decided to create the "Reasons why Doctor Zee completely utterly SUCKS" thread! Think of it as therapy for all of us who loathe the character, OK? I do want one tiny rule in all of this; no needless bashing of the actors (their acting perhaps, but let's not make it too personal, OK?). Because no matter WHO played him (Robbie Rist or Patrick Stuart--not Jean-Luc Picard; that's Patrick Stewart!), the character is a little jerk!

Here to kick things off;
HE TREATS THE WISE, SAGACIOUS COMMANDER ADAMA LIKE A FEEBLE, INCOMPETENT BOOB!

That boy needs a haircut, too....with a machete!

And I think Stuart's somewhat 'muddled' accent is actually real; the actor's dad was Chad Stuart, of the '60s singing duo, "Chad and Jeremy" (both Brits).
Still agree that he should have it smacked out of him though! Be worth a try....

And doesn't Robbie Rist's 'Zee' voice kind of remind you of "The Keeper" from the classic Star Trek episode, "The Menagerie (aka The Cage)?"
How did they do that, anyway? Did they dub him over with someone else's voice (the obvious solution), or did they modulate Rist's own voice (which probably hadn't broken yet at that time)? I detect some electronic modulation-artifacting in the voice (little warbles here and there that sound artificial). Maybe it's just me...

Still hate him, though!!

As for Rist, his voice reminds me of Mary Hart. You know, the rumor that someone had a seizure because of her voice.

Damn, that's funny!

I was thinking (as I'm inclined to do on occasion), that's probably why they s**t-canned poor Robbie. They couldn't afford to pay him AND Mary Hart for the same role.

Glen Larson (who had a '60s vocal group at one time, I understand ) probably looked up his old friend/rival Chad Stuart (assuming they knew each other; totally hypothetical), saw that he also had a blond, mop-topped child (just like Larson's fifty or so kids) and said, "You know, with your boy's blond hair and not-quite-fully-British accent..."

And an obnoxious character was re-born! He is the TOS' precursor to Jar-Jar (less stupid, but equally annoying).

The other thing I don't like about Dr. Zee is this notion that he thinks he's Starbuck's son.

I never liked that character of BSG. Special child, and without a reason other than being smart, it was the writers problem not the actor.

Good point about him being delusional to the point of believing he was Starbuck's kid. Uh, not to be too literal, but from the episode Angela (pronounced "an-GEL-uh", so as not to be called "Angie" I guess) was already preggers when she met Starbuck!! And don't give me that nonsense line about 'a spiritual child.' I can't even grasp the leap of logic that allowed Zee to come to that conclusion. And didn't ANYONE aboard the Galactica recognize his ship as Starbuck's viper escape pod mated with a Cylon ship??
Maybe Starbuck could've slipped them a note saying,
"Not my kid. Take care of him anyway, OK?
Don't feel compelled to... I don't know....maybe, follow this ships' exhaust trail and come GET me or anything!!
Know how busy you are and such!

And just curious; where did Doctor Zee earn his doctorate? Onboard the U of G? With Athena as his teacher? Please...

As for Zee's womb education, let me guess; these are the same Ship o' Lights 'angels' that vow never to interfere with choice, yet they let Zee (their only begotten son--how Biblical) give humans advanced tech and knowledge. And they judge Starbuck "to be good...so very good" (sounds like Deanna Troi's schtick), yet they don't see fit to maybe...I don't know...RESCUE HIM PERHAPS?????

I mean, they brought back Apollo from the DEAD, yet they couldn't just give Starbuck a ship (or hell, just teleport him!)? The angels that resurrected Kara in New BSG at least had the good grace to give her a Viper AND a beacon to the 13th colony (not that it did them any good, but...)

I think I DID read somewhere (maybe on Sheba's galaxy; the website--Google it) that if G1980 continued they would've brought back Starbuck as a Ship of Lights being, but never got the chance. Oh well, the damage was done. G1980 was an ill-conceived premise; and as I've said before, Dr Zee was symptomatic of one of the bigger problems of the show (underestimating the show's fanbase, and assuming them all to be mentally feeble five year olds).

Or do a Rosemary's Baby plot; maybe he was Count Iblis' baby!! Dr Zee is Count Iblis' offspring!! OK, suddenly that makes the character almost cool. I think this is going to be my 'mental canon' for the character from now on.

PS: It'd also explain the not-quite-fully British accent. He's only half! Hee hee...

Not sure if I can make it up to my computer for clicking on that link! He looks a bit like Harry Knowles from "Ain't It Cool News"! Poor kid/man (rules out him being Iblis' son, that's for sure; maybe it was Patrick Stuarts' version of Zee...).

Oh well, still feel bad for Cousin Oliver being handed his hat after the 3 part pilot (tough enough for an adult; imagine it for a 13 yr old kid?).

I never thought about it till now, but, you're right, he did sound like the Keeper.
