I was thinking, and decicded to share my ideas. Some may be sort of lame, so please state your opionons. :)
As we all know, Pegasus is supposed to have a crew of atleast a 1000 people. During the Battle of New Caprica, she probably only had about 100 or so. If she had atleast 500-800, she could of had all of her batteries maned, or atleast most, meaning she would have more firepower then just her front batteries. If Lee didn┤t give the order "Steady as she goes, take us right in to the center", Pegasus would not of taken so many massive hits. Instead of going straight in, Lee could of taken her all around the Basestars, like in a circle, and made several short FTL Jumps, like approach a Basestar, then jump in right behind it, and nuke it (Guessing Pegasus had nukes on board) Even if she didn┤t have nukes, an FTL Jump close enough to a Basestar would have caused major, or atleast moderate damage to the Basestar (In 4x17 "Someone to Watch over me" Boomber did an FTL jump so close to Galactica that it caused severe damage to her port bow section and since Pegasus is about 10 or more times larger then a Raptor, she would have done a lot more damage when she jumped.) Also if Pegasus had more Raptors then just the five used for the escape, and she had some amred with nukes, or atleast ship-to-ship missles, that would of helped a bit. There is the possibilite that if she had atleast 20 vipers aboard, that could of helped with the raiders.

Sorry to disagree with you, but I'm not sure those would have been effective. You're probably right in that a strategy of hit and run attacks probably could have taken out the basestars, but that wouldn't have been as effective at distracting them from the Galactica, which was Lee's main goal. The Pegasus would have survived, but I'm not too sure about the Galactica.

Also, I'm pretty sure the ship was fully crewed. I don't remember anyone ever saying it wasn't.

Of course, the real truth is that it's a TV show and the writers will just do whatever they want.

Good point, but she was undermaned, it was mentioned a few times, in Lay down your Burdens part II The Pegasus has her hallways completely empty when Lee was walking around, both Pegasus and Galactica where undermaned, that's part of the reason they leave New Caprica, Lee said to his father "We are in no postion to fight" It was also mentioned in the first few episodes of Season Three, that neither Galactica nor Pegasus had enough people to crew it, either Lee or Bill said that both ships where being run by "Skelaton crews".

Side note on the battle - the Galactica falling like a brick toward the surface... that has to be one of the best sequences in the entire series!

Oh, right. They'd all gone down to New Caprica. Now I remember.
