What do you guys think?

Did the Colonials need a dedicated "Attack Bomber" in the Airwings of the Battlestars to be able to bring some real firepower against an enemy target on a higher level than what the Vipers could? I know they had the RAPTOR/COMBAT RAPTOR but that is more along the line of an ASSAULT TRANSPORT than a craft that is set-up for high speed anti-ship/ground targets.

Did the Colonials need something along these lines?

I personally think if this "bomber" style viper is as powerful as it looks then I would say yes. If the Galactica could fire it's big nukes then it could take out a base star no problem. However, for the most part, it couldn't as Adama explained to Lee in Razor, that the fighters would shoot down the nukes before they reached the target. So I think that these bombers could effectively deliver a powerful blow of a nuke and avoid being hit by anti-aircraft fire or ship to ship fire.

I like the concept. You found it, so what do you think? It's impressive.

Nah I think they have the raptors with the missiles attacked for these kind of things

Yea, I would like to have seen a more diverse airwing on the Battlestars with more types in use - similar to the multi-type airwings used on today's aircraft carriers.

While the RAPTORS did carry missiles and performed a ECM role - they were pretty much sitting ducks in a real fight and had to bug out if he one Cylon got on their tail. Like I said in my first post, they appear to be built more like Assualt Transports - able to carry troops and some armament to keep the enemy's head down while they landed them and to do some A2G work to support them. I just don't see them doing the Anti-ship role though.

The Vipers are suposed to be able to carry missiles but I can't recall ever seeing one shoot one. We know the small craft can carry nukes as the small Cylon Raiders carried 4x of them each.

IMHO, I think a big fast dedicated Attack Platform that could carry the big "Ship Cracker" missiles yet being almost as fast and nimble as a Viper would have made Galacticas life a WHOLE LOT EASIER in some of the fights she was involved in.
