Found some thing interesting I didn't know. The "THUNDERFIGHTER" used in the TV series BUCK ROGERS IN THE 25th CENTURY was actually the first concept design for the TOS BSG VIPER! Interesting huh. I kinda wished they would have used it as well as it is a sharp little design and would have fit well in the BSG world. thumbsup.gif

I read that Glen Larson was going to call the vipers "Starhounds." That's a DOG of a name, IMO! Hee hee.

I really don't think they would have used "Starhound" in the revamped series. And apparently up into shooting, Apollo was named, "Skylar." Glen Larson's names were often a mixed bag. For example, "Boxey???"

"Quick Skylar, to the Starhound!" *gross* I think the show we got was WAY better. One can see why things changed into what aired on TV.

I always thought the space craft used in Buck Rogers was called the Starfighter.

Was called both actually IIRC. Started out as the Thunderfighter and was switched as because Starfighter sounded more "Spacie" I imagine.

Remember - it was the 70's. post-83-1091138941.gif

Either one is cool.

It is interesting how the shows both use fighters (Galactica & Buck)... while Star Trek didn't (each episode that is). Any views on why? Or which is better? *DEBATE* smile.gif

There were actually more than one version of the Starfighter:

Standard 1 or 2 Seater
"Quad" 4 Seater (Buck & Wilma took Tweeky and the Dr. on a trip somewhere was the only time I remember it)
Enhanced Starfighter (Buck had the only one of these I believe)

As per CK, question - I think it was based all on the "LOCATION." While ST & BSG both took place as their main point onboard ship - BSG was invisioned as like an Aircraft Carrier I think and a major factor of the action was the fighting. A big capital ship with no place to repair isn't going to go a slugging match with another capital ship each week and stay going. With the fighters a few could be killed off without risking the ship too much.

BR was pretty much set on Earth so they did their flying from there and their fighters could travel long distances.

ST had the transporter device so wasn't much use for the small ships. In fact I think I read somewhere the reason they came up with the Shuttlecraft was just to give them another place to shoot to get off the Enterprise.

On Buck Rogers, it WAS a starfighter; on old BSG, it was going to be called a Starhound (possibly the most butt-ugly name for a ship ever). cylonnono.gif

Now, I do like this one with the Colonial colors. Very nice.
The only thing that is a bit "eh" on these is the engines... they seem to stick out quite a bit, don't you think? For the amount of "ship" to the amount of engines not enclosed... I'm not that "sold." I guess they are "okay" ... no worse than an X-Wing, or even a commercial jet plan (SEE: Reality tongue.gif).

And the way those engines are angled it'll probably won't fly that well either.

I only remember 2 types of the Starfighters the 1-2 seat versions and the 4 seat versions.

Yeah they used a lot of props from BSG in Buck Rogers.

Not only props, but parts of sets, costume variants, control panels, even ships from the ragtag fleet. I had myself a guilty pleasure Buck Rogers marathon only yesterday (I know; the shame! Hee hee) and I saw the TOS BSG prison barge ship (painted red), the Galactica shuttlecraft (both the landing gear/hatchway set pieces and newer FX footage of the miniature itself). Buck's own "Ranger 7" NASA spaceship of the pilot movie was in itself a redress of the "Paradeen" shuttlecraft from the TOS BSG episode, "Greetings From Earth." Even the 'disco dancing ropes' from BSG were used in the Buck Rogers episode, "Space Rockers" (which, I'm ashamed to say, was part of my mini-marathon.... :P ).

Since both were Glen Larson/Universal projects, swapping props/sets/etc. was probably just par for the course... ;)

The Star Trek franchise (both the movies and TV shows) also has a long history of such prop/set sharing as well between it's series and movies.
