Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams will return to direct Star Wars: Episode IX, Disney and Lucasfilm have announced.

According to StarWars.com, Abrams is also on board to co-write the project with Chris Terrio. Episode IX will be produced by Abrams and Bad Robot, as well as Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan and Lucasfilm.

"With The Force Awakens, J.J. delivered everything we could have possibly hoped for, and I am so excited that he is coming back to close out this trilogy," Kennedy said.

Colin Trevorrow was originally attached to direct Star Wars: Episode IX, but due to alleged friction with Lucasfilm, the Jurassic World director was dropped from the project. Prior reports suggested The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson was being eyed to helm Episode IX, the prospect of which he cast doubt on earlier this week.

Star Wars: Episode IX will be released in theaters on May 24, 2019.

This is good news, I trust J.J. as he did a good job with Episode VII.
