From what I've seen of this so far, it looks like it's going to be something really special - in April 2009, TOKYOPOP is releasing the very first Battlestar Galactica Manga: 'Echoes of New Caprica'

Featuring a story from BSG star Richard Hatch, the three never-before-told stories center around the occupation and escape from New Caprica, as the colonial fleet continues its perilous journey toward Earth while the brutal Cylon occupation of New Caprica continues to impact the lives of everyone.

I'm not a huge Manga fan (my wife is), but if Hatch is doing the story, I'm with Aphrodite on this one! His TOS-era books are awesome (and IMO are the real 'second season' of TOS). Cannot wait to read some of his new series' stuff. And there is still plenty of story gold to me mined in the New Caprica arc. Thanks for the article! cylonclap.gif

RH also wrote a story arc for the 1990's TOS comics, so I'm very much looking forward for this.

Is that the one where they found a prehistoric, abandoned earth with the obelisk? That was cool. Only read one of them, but it was cool. cylonclap.gif

drool.gif Major envy. I have his autograph as well, but I've never had his books in my hand to autograph when I've met him (about 5 times now; keep forgetting! 64K brain and all). Awesome, Aphrodite! cylonclap.gif

That's one of the stories. The one he wrote had Apollo being tempted by Count Isbli, giving the character an almost Christ feel, to a point.

Wonder how RH's storytelling style and obvious affection for the old show will translate into his story for the new. By the way, has anyone here (besides me) read the Tom Zarek origins comic? It was a good, brisk read. Not a lot of surprises, but some nice shadings to the character. Made him out to be somewhat more heroic (yet still morally flawed) than the series did. RH would like the service it did for his character I'll bet. cylonclap.gif

I read it. I thought it was a great insight into Tom Zarek, and what made him the man we know from the show.

After reading that book, I'm a little sad that Zarek (as he is now) is so corrupted from the idealism (however misguided; I do NOT condone terrorism) of his youth. But given that he is such a conflicted, dramatic idealist, it makes sense that he'd leave the world at the receiving end of a firing squad! Overly-dramatic people sometimes meet overly-dramatic ends; often of their own doing! A reason why I like my nice, boring life "drama-free," thank you! cylonnono.gif

Kinda sad that Zarek became the one thing he accused the Colonial goverment of being. Just goes to show that what they say about power is true. A great cautionary tale, Zarek's story is.

Brilliant observation. cylonclap.gif Interesting how extremes in radicalism (be they fascist or communist) tend to have the same result; a small group, or a single person who has the gall to assume they know what is best for everyone (squashing individuality in the process). Takes tremendous GALL to make an assumption like that, IMO. Zarek is a good lesson for all that, too!

I'm wondering if Richard Hatch's Zarek tale in the new manga take all if that into considiration? I hope so, seeing as RH, in an interview, said the Zarek comics heklped him see his character in a new way.

I read or heard somewhere that RH wanted more heroism in Zarek. I would say (not to contradict RH; that's blasphemy! hee hee) that in his own mind, Zarek IS being heroic (in his darkly cynical way). Right and wrong are to some extent, matters of perspective. That great Obi-wan Kenobi ( tongue.gif ) put it best, "Many of the truths that we cling to depend greatly on your point of view." Even murder (like when Zarek had the Quorum of 12 shot) can be justified (otherwise warfare would simply be organized homicide; and to some, it IS). But I do think that the Zarek comics offered some insights to the man. cylonclap.gif

I saw that same interview, when RH said he wanted Zarek to go down a hero, and you're right, even the most "evil" people see themselves as heroic.
