I can not say enough nice comments about this movie. It is full of energy, action, drama, suspense, comedy, science-fiction and even romance - all condensed into a great movie.
Where to begin? It starts with lots of action. It is in-your-face, heart-pounding action from the word go. The story is quickly staged in a dramatic space battle that tells the woes of our ill-fated world, and demonstrates the heroic actions of our heroes-to-be.
Earth has been decimated with nuclear meteorites fired by the Gamelons with the intentions of colonizing our world as their planet’s life will soon fade. Incredible as it seems, humans have learned to survive under the surface of our world to be shielded from the radiation that plagues our planet. It seems that there is no hope until a small capsule from a distant planet called Iscandar arrives with schematics on how to build a new space ship that will be able to travel great distances and powered with great energy to fight off the Gamelons. Now it is Earth’s turn to fight back! In a short time frame an old World War 2 battleship that lies in ruins is quickly converted into the most powerful Space Battleship ever known….the Space Battleship Yamato!
The movie has adapted several ideas and plot points from several of its animated predecessors and developed a great story. The action is larger than life! Rarely is there a moment of rest and when there is a moment of rest it is to further develop the story and the characters in the story. The movie is very tight in its plot development and the development of its characters. It balances new ideas with old ideas of the Space Battleship Yamato, while not failing to deliver a great dramatic story.
The movie is very much a powerful message about the environment and restoring Earth back to normal again. It is a story as much about survival as it is about love – the love for Earth, mankind, and for each other. It is this HOPE of survival and restoring the planet that fuels our characters drive and determination to succeed in their mission to save Earth. But they face overwhelming odds and alien technology that is superior to their own. However, as story progresses, the Space Battleship Yamato overcomes major opposition and continues to prove that Earth still has enough fight left in it to beat the Gamelons.
There is a great sense of duty and honor and sacrifice which is pretty much a must have in any Japanese movie. The culture is built around these three ideals. So it is no surprise to see that the main characters are all driven the by the same ideals. Captain Okita, Kodai, Yuki, and the other characters are all brave and noble in a way that is almost super human in nature.
The music, special effects, cinematography, story, actors and direction is flawless. The movie does not disappoint from start to finish with one exception. That this critic is very biasly attached to the Yamato, and wished for a slightly happier ending for it and its crew. However, on that note, it does deliver a happy ending for Earth. That love prevails and so does mankind. Through duty, honor and sacrifice mankind will live. Go Yamato!
