The Green Lantern

The Green Lantern is Explosive! It is filled with thrills and chills that make this movie worth seeing. I certainly went in there not expecting a lot but the movie not only is great for educating those who are unfamiliar with the Lantern Corps but also drives home a point that being a Green Lantern is not an easy job. People die, lots of people die!

This movie is driven with action and wonderful special effects, but most importantly it is character driven. Wonderfully casted, and well acted, Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard all deliver a memorable performance and each creating interesting and developed characters that are both appealing and tragic. Ryan Reynolds as the star character, Hal Jordon aka the Green Lantern delivers a modern day tragic hero. He is fighting the forces of evil and fighting the demons inside of him that are preventing him from being the hero that he was selected to be, The Green Lantern.

Lively, is a great modern day woman who is not the stereotypical damsel in-distress but rather she is strong and heroic. She is the balance in Hal Jordan’s life. She is constantly providing Hal with insight to himself through her actions and her words and helps him along the way in his development as a Green Lantern. She is absolutely amazing in the movie.

Peter Sarsgaard does an amazing job as the tragic villain in the movie. An unwilling but susceptible antagonist who becomes the vessel for the main villain, a space creature that thrives on fear. He plays a “harsh, disturbing, dark-edged character despite his boyish countenance” (Imdb). It seems that rather if you are good or evil in this movie there is a certain Shakespearean tragedy that appears in this movie that pivots people against each other due to poor decisions or lack of will-power that will enable them to surpass these tragic events.

The movie keeps you guessing until the very end, will Hal Jordan prevail or will he succumb to his fear. It is a movie about good vs. evil; man vs. machine, and will-power vs. fear. The movie is an excellent romp-ride through the galaxy that exceeds all expectations and delivers a stellar performance. Two-thumbs up!
